After living in a 6000 square mile sea of concrete surrounded by millions of people located in the middle of a desert with 3-digit average daily temperature for 4+ months, my perception of LA change a bit. I do agree with you that, this city/state is not for everyone, I just hope you make your escape before you end up hiding in a cabin in the woods after killing bunch of people.

What, you mean you are actually getting paid?

Hah, I am a freak with dual personality so I don't mind doing double duty just as long as someone is paying the crazy one!

Same here, which is awesome because if someone was paying me for this, then it would no longer be a hobby but a job. I would eventually get tired of it and start to dislike it, start calling in sick and eventually quit coming altogether!

$65K will go quite a ways in the Triangle area. We lived in Durham (right next door to Chapel Hill) from 2008 to 2010 while my wife went for her Master's at UNC. I supported both of us comfortably on a $65K salary, and that included a 70-ish mile commute (one-way) to Greensboro daily. We bought a nice 3bed/2ba 1700 sq ft house in Southwest Durham for $220K.

Chapel Hill tends to be a bit more expensive in some areas, but not drastically so. And the commute from areas like Durham to Chapel Hill are NOTHING. I could be on the UNC campus from our old house in 15 minutes without ever getting on a freeway.

As to what $65K translates to, that's all relative. If it's a move within the company and they WANT him there, he should be able to negotiate something close to a lateral move salary-wise. If it's a move HE wants, they may expect him to take a pay cut, but they may not. Honestly, if he's living comfortably on $65K in LA, he could probably get by in Chapel Hill on $50Kish no problem.

Mike

It's a VALUES thing. Not everyone values the same thing...so no need for everyone to fight about which is "better". If you want to raise kids, then Chapel Hill probably wins hands down because you don't want to raise them in a 1BR or 2BR apartment. But if the family thing isn't important, then L.A. might win if you're willing to sacrifice living space.

If it is just on 1 income, he will be fine. His money will go further in NC but it is all up to him.
