Will be looking for a room for a couple of nights within L.A or a few miles out. A lot of the cheaper ones I see seem to be in not so safe areas.

In what areas should I avoid looking for a room?

I need something under $100 a night.

LA is big. Where do you need to be close to? Have you looked at tripadvisor?

Have you tried Hotwire or Priceline? You may try areas surrounding LAX as there is a large concentration of hotels, and you may find something decent for your price point. There's not much to do in the immediate vicinity, but if you just need a place to sleep, it might be worth a shot.

I haven't been to L.A since I was a kid so I'm not too sure what I need to be close to. I know I will be driving up to San Fran so maybe something close to highway access. I'm not sure really. Just going to spend a couple of nights and getting an overall feel for L.A and visiting a few places.

You're entire question does not make sense and its why no one has answered you. There is no "a few miles outside LA".

I'd avoid the one that had a dead body in one of the rooftop water tanks.

This hotel is downtown near Union Station and reasonably priced:
Metro Plaza Hotel (Los Angeles, CA) - Hotel Reviews - TripAdvisor
It's very near Chinatown and the freeways are nearby - I don't know if parking is available or not. Just a few steps away is Philippes, good spot for breakfast and French Dip sandwiches!
The nice thing about being near Union Station you can take Metro (light) rail to many locales in LA so you don't have to absolutely drive everywhere.

I saw that story on the news. A 26 year old Canadian girl. She paid or so the story states $65 a night for the room. Somewhere in the downtown area. Very tragic story. The guests had been complaining about low water pressure, and water that didn't taste right. Seems that LA Strangler use to stay there, and some other serial killer also had lived there. Sounds like a definite place to avoid.

Finding a decent place to stay for an affordable price can be so difficult. Sometimes its best to just stay in suburbs where prices are lower and rent a car.

It's the Hotel Cecil. They actually have a boutique hotel inside the Cecil - taking up certain floors - called "Stay".

Richard Ramirez, the Night Stalker, lived at the Cecil at one time.

Are you taking the I-5 to SF, or the 101? Makes a difference in recommendation. Also, LA is huge. You might get a room in Burbank off the I-5, but if you want to go to Venice, say, that's a long drive. You might want to look at a map and get an idea of distance and where you want to go. They get advice on a motel in an area near there.
