Hi there. I'm relocating from NYC to LA next week and am looking to take a more southern route to avoid the snow, as I am a terrible driver in inclement weather. I'm also not a super experienced driver and will be taking this trip solo. I have about a week, perhaps a bit more, to make the voyage, and would appreciate any suggestions on the best route. I'm not looking to sight see, just to get there as soon as possible. I'm a 36 year old woman and am a bit concerned about safety as well. I will have a few pieces of luggage in my trunk.

I've taken I-40 and I-20/I-10. This time of year, I-40 should be fine - pick it up in North Carolina and take it all the way to Barstow, CA where you pick up the I-15 to the 210 freeway or the I-10 (depending on where you're going in LA). If you want a more southerly route, take I-20 - it connects with the I-10 west of Abilene, TX. You can still pick up I-40 in NC and take it to Little Rock, then drop down to the I-20. It'll go thru Texas and connect with the I-10 which will take you up thru Phoenix and on into California and LA.
