My husband and I may be moving to CA in the next few months as he has an opportunity for a temporary job transfer through his company to Fontana, CA. The position will likely be a 1 yr contract so we are looking to just rent a place and enjoy some time in CA before moving back home to NJ. Based on the brief research I have done, it appears that the Fontana area is referred to as the "Inland Empire" and does not appear to be the best place to move. I would really like to get feedback on any possible towns as far west as around West Covina that would be safe and rent in the $1,500 range. It will just be the 2 of us so a 1 bedroom is sufficient. Thanks in advance for your help!

the inland empire isn't a terrible place to live fyi. there are good and not so good areas just like anywhere in southern california. the northern parts of fontana are actually newer, nicer developments. the same can be said for much of the surrounding communities around the 210 freeway. having said that, i would recommend posting questions about this area in the inland empire forum.

You should be able to find a good apartment in Claremont, which is eastern LA County. Claremont is a great place to consider, and is home to many colleges, but also tree-lined streets as you may find more typical of East Coast first suburbs, mixed with some newer areas. Your husband would be about 25-30 minutes from Fontana, but you would be closer to LA and the beaches than further east. Nearby La Verne would also be a place that you might consider for a Fontana commute, provided you wanted somewhat easy access to LA.

The other benefit is that you can easily fly in and out of Ontario, so you don't always have to go to LAX if you need to head back east, or you have visitors from out of town, etc. Since you will be there for a year, Ontario can save the hassle of going to/from LAX.

If you're going to be in the area, I would highly recommend using Ontario Airport as much as possible. It's much closer than LAX, and much, much easier to get in/get out of. It actually has a longer runway than LAX, and is designated as a backup airfield to LAX, they're run by the same airport authority, LA World Airports.
