Hi All,

I will be interning in Downtown LA from the end of May through through the end of July and am searching for housing. I am unfamiliar with the area and am not sure where I should be looking for housing-- there are so many different neighborhoods! I am looking for a 1-bedroom under $1000 in a safe area where I can jog around, and from where the commute to downtown will not be too terrible. Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you!

Sorry but you won't find that for under $1,000 per month.

You might consider a studio and a higher budget. The other problem is "short-term" rentals are often more expensive than a long-term rental (say 12 months).

Take a look at CraigsList - Los Angeles under "temporary/sublet" housing and you might find something.

Thank you for the advice! Do you have any suggestions as to which neighborhoods I should be looking at on Craigslist?

Where are you moving from?

You can look into the following neighborhoods (generally safe and close to downtown):
1. Echo Park/Silverlake
2. Miracle Mile neighborhood (near La Brea / Wilshire Blvd)
3. Los Feliz
4. Hollywood
5. South Pasadena / Pasadena (both separate cities but close to downtown).

And you could consider Downtown LA itself.....if you don't mind relatively dense, urban living.

Silver Lake sounds like a good choice for you, safe, fun, and a reservoir to jog around!

There are rooms in two bedrooms that people do sublease ^^^^^^

But generally two bedrooms downtown go in the $2500+ range, so someone willing to rent a room out at $1K or less would be really unusual.

At minimum, if you contact this person, I'd make sure you contact the leasing office of the building also and ensure that the actual lease holder on the unit is the one you are interacting with.
