Renting a car might be difficult for you OP. Getting around might be tough since LA does have some **** poor public transport especially if you're on the Westside.

For the clubs, you will need a passport. I don't think they're going to accept an Irish DL. You'll probably need to take a taxi to get to the good ones and even then the lines are terribble if you don't arrive early, like before 10pm.

Don't expect a European style night life though. You'll be out the bar before 2 am especially if you're out on the West side.

Other than that, grocery items cost about the same all over L.A. but the cost of living in general like gas, rent, movies, clubs are expensive. I hope you have planned ahead and have saved your money for this trip. By the way, Santa Monica is home to many from the UK.
Of course we have, please don't be so patronising. It is very common thing for Irish students to visit the US in the summer months on a J1 working Visa. We already have accomadation sorted it's just logistics and trying to get a concept of what to expect when we arrive I'm trying to get.

just be aware that for those not of legal drinking age (under 21) LA isn't as fun as other metros like Boston or Miami Beach. This is especially true for my Brit friends who were used to going out to pubs & clubbing without any restrictions. And just to let you know Frat Row (and most of Westwood in general) is fairly dead during the summer months when students are on break. The plus is that the UCLA zone is a hub for ZipCar sharing, so it shouldn't be a problem to rent a car for temporary use.
