It seems like unless you are in the entertainment business or profit from it in some way it's kind of annoying. If you aren't employed in or trying to be employed in the business and it suddenly moved..would you really cry about it?

I don't see this happening anytime in the near future or ever...but would L.A be a better place without the entertainment business and the wannabes , egotistical people that it attracts?

Also it would be hard to argue that home prices in good areas would go down significantly. Also not hearing about people talking about their projects or scripts and all that nonsense would be a big plus for a lot of people I would think.

Agree or disagree?

I would say LAs image would be so much better, because LAs image across the country and the world is dominated by Hollywood images.

However in the real world, its very easy to avoid those egotistical people. There are so many other things to get involved with. I have basically no connection or association with the entertainment industry, and I do not run of interesting things to do, or cool, down-to-earth people to meet.

Having said that, I have also met people, who have a passion for screenwriting, acting on the side, film, but are also really interesting, engaging people.

I think the ONE benefit if the entertianment industry were NOT here, would be the cost of housing/rent might be a little less. One of the oft asked questions about why its so expensive here . . . well I'm sure some of the celebrities, executives who are richer than some countries, undoubtedly do jack up the prices. In that point I am in TOTAL agreement.

As far as projects and scripts . . . they are more interesting to hear about than hedge funds and how's your portfolio, and going to the Harvard school of business. But I personally do not engage in all the tacky Hollywood oriented tourist attractions.

"Would L.A be better without the "entertainment" business here?"

No it wouldn't.

Entertainment and related industries represent a significant chunk of the area's economy.

Only if the jobs and income from entertainment were replaced by something else. But if we were a city relying on big power plants or docks, would we be better off? Are blue collar drunks better than snobby Hollywood types?

I don't think the city would be as big as it is today. And it's hard to imagine LA without it. But I don't think it has as big an effect on the people/city as some like to claim.

Lets just put it this way, I can barely stand going west of La Brea because of the wannabe Hollywood crowd it attracts. I love the vibrancy of everything else though. It's just a better feeling without them and the biz around.

I know that LA would suffer as a result of it disappearing without a back up industry to anchor it so I wouldn't wish it gone and it does give the city an image even if its mostly negative.

It just feels less intimidating on the other half, friendlier, less hassle and more opportunities. It just feels like you can get a lot more done and rise up.

I would have to with a slight yes that LA would be better off without Hollywood and its many offspring.

Well it kind of is. The port of LA is about as important to the regions economy as The entertainment industry. Its just not as sexy so it doesn't get the same attention.

No, the entertainment industry is the best known industry in LA and is what made LA famous. It creates a lot of jobs for the local economy.

As much as people say that though, the reality is, is that the center of gravity of LA, its schools, places of employment, museums, etc., etc., is all slightly tilted to the west of La Brea. But I understand what you are saying.
