Hi, I have been dating this girl for sometime now. We both want to spend some quality time together around Santa Monica on a weekend where we can go shopping, walk to the beach or go to Venice beach. What would be the most affordable place to stay for the weekend in Santa Monica?

You mean the cheapest?

Try one of the internet travel websites like Yahoo.

What's your budget? Affordable can mean anything given the area.

^^ The HI hostels are great. And if both of you are in your 20's, you'd have quite a memorable weekend.

Try looking on AirBNB, a listing site for people who have accommodation available to rent privately for short term stays, ranging from a private room in a house to a complete apartment/house. It's a little less formal and generally cheaper than some of the other vacation listing sites such as VRBO. Often the listers are people who travel frequently themselves and are looking to cover their costs/boost their income while they are away.

I just did a quick search and there were a bunch of good-looking studio and one-bedroom places between Santa Monica and Venice within six blocks or closer of the beach for between $100-150 per night (several were on the Venice Canals, which would be pretty romantic...), and you'll never come even close to finding that kind of value in a hotel in the area. No room service or course, but with the money you save, you can order in a great meal, or there's a bunch of walkable, good places to eat up and down the beach and surrounds.

I have friends who have both rented their place out at times and rented other people places, and spoke very positively about the whole set-up.

If you really have to have a hotel and you can go up to $200 per day, take a look at the Cal-Mar Hotel on California and 3rd. It's one block from the Promenade and a couple of blocks from the beach with a nice pool that is heated to a warm temp year round. It's a converted apartment building, so each suite has a full kitchen and separate bedroom and is slightly different from the next. It's a bit older so is not for everyone, but it has a nice relaxed vibe, it's very clean, and the staff are really friendly and helpful and have all been working there for years, which I think is always a good sign. They do charge $15 a night for parking, which stings a bit, and the nearest available long-termish street parking is probably six or seven blocks away, but you could walk easily or take a cab from the hotel to most amenities and the bus stop is close by too.
