Hey guys,

I was recently accepted into grad school at USC (yay!!). I had planned to live in USC grad housing, but it turns out that due to a requirement to remain in LA through the summer, it makes more sense and costs less for people in my program to have a year-round lease somewhere. I am from DC, and aside from a few vacations, I know nothing about Los Angeles in terms of where to live. I was hoping the experts here would be able to help me out. I'm not looking to spend more than $1000/month in a studio or 1-bedroom in a decent neighborhood. If you guys could offer some advice I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Sounds like you might find something along Expo Line. Expo line station at USC with the other a block away.

It sounds with your lack of rent funds, you may have to go way out to the 'burbs, or find some one to roommate with. Because USC is served by Expo Line, your options for housing and transportation increase quite a bit. Please research at these sites:

www-dot-mta-dot-net (Metro bus, subway and light rail)
Consider housing along Expo, Red, Purple, or Gold lines. Easy frequent service commutes.

www-dot-metrolinktrains-dot-com (Metrolink commuter train service in 5 county LA area)
Consider housing near these lines, especially if you have to go far out for low rent.
