Upfront: FiOS is not available in the area.

Hey there. I'm moving to Los Feliz from San Diego (lurked here a bunch and really appreciated everyone's input to not-my-threads!!) and will be bringing my DirecTV subscription with me. This means I do NOT need a cable company for TV. I had TWC internet in SD and wasn't thrilled with it - a lot of dropped packets and laggy internet.

When I called DirecTV to move me, they offered me a deal on AT&T U-verse. They claim to have a fiber connection (not molasses slow copper-line DSL) which would give me a dedicated connection so allegedly I would always get full speed access instead of sharing a connection with everyone in my area. However, they are AT&T, who I have had for cell service before and loathed. I am also leery of their speed claims. They have a smaller pipe, but assure me (yeah right) that it will be faster because it's fiber. Lastly, data cap shouldn't be an issue - I tracked my TWC usage and never came close to hitting U-verse's 250GB cap.

That all said, TWC has a much higher bandwidth for just a little more money and my problems with TWC may have been just related to TWC in the SD area.

So, have people moved from TWC to U-verse or vice versa? Or is there another provider I should consider?

Thanks in advance.

I have some experience with residential U-Verse in OC. Its basically DSL speed. They have the guts to call 6 Mbit down "Platinum" or some crap like that. It not fiber to your door like Verizon's FIOS, more like fiber to the neighborhood. TWC isn't cheap, but its decently quick. Connection problems tend to be localized issues.

Just figured I'd update this. I tried U-Verse for a week at their top level speed for Los Feliz - 15 Mb/s - and it really didn't cut it for me. Netflix always looked a little blocky even though it should have been well within the transfer rate.

I ended up switching to TWC for internet for 20 Mb/s at $10 more a month and am completely satisfied. I've never had a speed problem and only twice has my internet connection dropped out, both very late at night at like 1AM. When I called TWC they said they were doing scheduled maintenance and the drop out never lasts for more than a half hour.

Hope this helps somebody else out there!
