Avoid uptown Whittier. Too many low-lifer renters in the heart of the village area. You need to be in the Hacienda Heights/La Puente area or even Diamond Bar, and since you are single I would seek a roommate or look for housing seeking a roommate.

I was told a starting point for looking would be Uptown Whittier. Is this a good place to begin? Also does anyone know of an apartment locator service for the area?. I have used a location company to good success before.

Thanks in advance.
Hacienda Heights (it's a mix of areas--chock full of apartments; some good, some great, some not-so-good)
Rowland Heights
Whittier
La Habra (O.C.)
Fullerton (O.C.)
West Covina
Covina
Diamond Bar
Walnut

As it has been said on this forum many, many times before, one big secret to a happy life in Southern California is a short commute.

You may not seek out nightlife every night (or even every weekend) but you WILL be driving to and from work every day.

Sigh.....Uptown Whittier will be fine; it's certainly no worse at its worst than HH or La Puente, which (sorry OP) I forgot to mention (La Puente, that is).

.
If OP was looking at a 45min- hour commute, I'd agree. But considering that two of the hottest areas of LA are within a 35 minuted commute, the ease of walking to restaurants and bars cannot really be discounted.
