I will be moving from Texas to LA in the next 2 months and working in City of Industry. For a guy in his mid 20s what areas should I look at to live in keeping in mind im aware that travel time is important in LA. I would be looking for a 2 bedroom apt budget of $1500 - $2000. I was told a starting point for looking would be Uptown Whittier. Is this a good place to begin? Also does anyone know of an apartment locator service for the area?. I have used a location company to good success before.

Thanks in advance.

How long are you willing to commute? Whittier is probably the closest decent area to Industry but I think it's pretty family oriented. Assuming a ~30 minute commute each way the following areas are good options:

Diamond Bar
Chino Hills
Phillips Ranch (the only nice part of Pomona)
Brea/Fullerton
Yorba Linda

Pasadena would probably be ideal for a 20-something looking for decent nightlife. Claremont is a nice college town that might be an option but I doubt you could do the commute to either in under 30 minutes. Can't help you on apartment locating services but Craigslist is going to be your best resource for doing it yourself.

Pasadena would be a great area for a younger guy. Good nightlife, good amenities (museums, parks, golf courses, etc), and most parts are quite safe. Assuming regular commute hours, your commute would be going against traffic (east in the morning), generally.

try pasadena or downtown LA if you want a more urban environment, it is a reverse commute so shouldn't be longer than 20-30 min from each

otherwise arcadia, rowland heights, diamond bar, walnut, pomona(phillips ranch), brea, and chino hills are all really nice and shouldn't be more 30 min (diamond bar/chino hills may have some local traffic)

I would second Arcadia and also add Monrovia as a closer option. You would be ~ 20-25 minutes to Industry without traffic and 10-15 minutes to Pasadena.

The correct answer is that it depends on where you will be working in City of Industry.

City of Industry is something like 8-10 miles long.

BTW are you single or more family oriented? It makes a drastic difference. Basically there are family areas right nearby but also areas with lots of singles within a 30 minute rush hour drive.

I believe it's on the western part of COI. I'm single so no need for family necessities.

If that's the case, on your budget, I'd suck it up and make a 25-30 minute morning commute from Pasadena. Things are more lively there. If you live near Colorado Bl you can still find a 2bd older apartment in the $1500/mo range and you'll be right next to the 210 fwy. From say Hill Ave, you'd commute about eight miles east on the 210 fwy, and then 5 miles or so south to Valley Bl where it might be 1/4 to 2 miles of surface streets into the western portions of COI.

Actually you can even live in DTLA but your budget would not get a 2bd there. More like around $1700-1800/mo for a 900sq ft open loft. But tons of young people and lots of bars, restaurants and clubs.

My gps says at this moment(4pm on a Friday afternoon) that its 15 miles from city of industry to DTLA and 26 minutes with no traffic, and COI to old town Pasadena is 17 miles and 34 minutes with a bit of traffic on the 605 north.

I should note that both commutes are true reverse commutes and encounter minimal traffic.

Yes - this a very good point.

Cty of Industry resembles a very long string bean and may be from 1- 2 miles from north to south, to extending from the 605 to the 57 along its east/west axis.

That covers a lot of territory.

OK - thn you are a straight shot down the 606 South from Pasadena - or a very short trip up the 605 north from Uptown Whittier.

An alternative from Uptown Whittier is Turnbull Canyon Road - just make sure you like curving and twisting roads with blind corners.

I've driven Turnbull many times - its a great place to work on your cornering.

Just watch out for deer darting across the road, or horseback riders crossing at the trail intersections.

Are you a 2011 graduate of Texas Tech?
