Hi! I'm relocating from the east coast (Baltimore,MD) to work in South El Monte. I just want some place close by so that I can go home at lunch to take out my dog for a bit. Is there somewhere close by - 15 min - that is still safe? I'd rather spend no more than $1300-$1400 a month for rent (1 person).

Depending on where your work is, it might be a 10-15 minute drive just to get out of S. El Monte.

S. El Monte isn't that terrible btw, but probably not very high on the list of places people want to move to and live in.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere in El Monte. If you have to live nearby I would suggest Montebello around the Town Center Mall and just above the 60 freeway. Or just south on Lincoln Ave. in the hills.

Your main arteries are Garvey or Rosemead Blvd. And when you say 15 mins, do you mean walking or driving?

pasadena should be fine, maybe 20 minutes max on a bad traffic day but it's a reverse commute

Garvey and Rosemead are both slow. So is Peck. So are all the main surface streets. You won't get far in 15 minutes.

I'd live in South El Monte, El Monte, or Whittier, depending on where the job is. I lived in El Monte for a long time and was fine. I've had friends in South El Monte and in Whittier, and they survived, too. The crime rates in all the cities in the area are better than the national average - and much, much lower than Baltimore.

From So.El Monte, you could travel from Rosemead to Whittier or north to Temple City within 15 to 20 min.
