Driving on the 14 freeway, I counted at least ten TX plates going from Santa Clarita to Lancaster; that doesn't even include the other state plates.

Yes, everyplace is recovering from the recession, even though it has taken longer than anyone expected, but now, let me ask you: where in the world are you getting the idea people are moving back to California? Is this just something you think is happening or do you have references to back this up? Actually it seems the opposite is still true.

Has it dawned on you, some of those might be tourists or people living there for a short time or maybe they are in the areas for business purposes? If they are driving around with license from other states and are permanent residence of CA, boy are they going to be surprised when they get a ticket for not registering their car!

Yeah I agree, and there are places that are actually thriving right now...versus struggling to recover.

I don't feel people are rushing to move back to CA (and especially L.A) for many reasons:

  1. .Very high property prices
  2. Low performing schools
  3. Very high unemployment on national level
  4. Red tape in regards to starting a business (rank #48 worst for business)
  5. Very bad traffic/ Long commutes
  6. Poor city services (bad roads, pot holes, long holds for 911/lapd)
  7. Welfare State Status - CA has 12% of population but 34% of welfare recipients living here
Is California the welfare capital? Page 1 of 4 | UTSanDiego.com

These aren't little issues, they are major issues that are very important to people ...yes other places have some of these issues too..but there aren't many that have ALL of these issues.

Another thing is that many cities that were once viewed as undesirable in many ways are experiencing a renaissance. L.A has more competition today than it once did.

Very well written. I'm here because I missed it a lot. But, the quality of life is awfully poor here. I am hoping to find a progessive gay friendly Mecca and away from ultra right wing Texas. So much here is unaffordable and it's only gotten more crowded (who would have thought that?). In your opinion, Which once undesirable places are now desirable?

Pittsburgh , Detroit , Downtown Cincinnati (over the rhine) have made a lot of progress in the last few years. Of course their weather is a lot different from L.A , but they are molding themselves into cities that people want to live in. Cincinnati already has people paying big $$ for new condos being developed in Over the Rhine.

Detroit seems to be the one with the most problems right now for sure, but could also have the most potential.

This article is pretty interesting though , about the potential of Detroit and what is going on right now.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/14/bu...anted=all&_r=0

Fast Company: How social entrepreneurship is rebuilding Detroit

Lot's of hipsters, artists flocking to these cities right now. Usually those are the first ones to come, then other demographics.

You have to look ahead...otherwise you'll be left behind.

These cities offer more for young people in my opinion than totally built out/ over saturated cities like L.A or NYC .
Especially for those that are looking to create something.

Much lower housing/property costs especially foster more of this creativity .

""Where everything's broken, anything's possible. Like the owner of this restaurant, a barbecue entrepreneur who took over a 30,000-square-foot building nearby for $100,000 and has people there doing everything from sewing jeans and coats for homeless people to doing metalwork and building furniture."

This article talks about how Detroit embodies that spirit and is very well written.
How A Young Community Of Entrepreneurs Is Rebuilding Detroit | Fast Company | Business + Innovation

There are problems..but a lot of opportunities too because the big players haven't really come in yet like they have in cities like L.A,NYC,SF and others.

WehoTex, for a progressive gay friendly Mecca have you looked at South Florida?.. Wilton Manors is a big gay community and Broward County is a democratic county. There are tons of gay people in Fort Lauderdale. Housing is much less too, even to live on the beach.

In pickup trucks and small sedans? Really?

<--right back at ya!

Just because you hated CA and moved away doesn't mean someone else didn't want to take your place -- and did!

I'll give you Pittsburgh! The demographics and politics there are awesome!

Detroit? ...eh...there's a reason people in the suburbs call it "Detroilet". Detroit won't change for many reasons, but the biggest is that it is occupied by people with a ghetto mentality who think that they own the city and who have ensconced themselves in all of its public offices. You think getting them out of those public offices will be an easy task?

I don't have a much better opinion of Cincinnati...

Yeah most likely. It would be pretty crazy to move to CA without a job offer...unless you were planning to be one of the many on welfare?

I know someone that is in Austin and just got a job offer in L.A so would be moving back.

Not sure if it's a trend though.
