Hollywood can be quite scary depending on the exact streets you are located on. I'm guessing the really cheap apartments are in the bad areas. I know you're coming from a crappy NYC apartment so if that's what you're benchmarking as acceptable I'd bet there are plenty of OK $1200-1300 1BR's and $1000-1100 studios in decent areas of Hollywood. If you want something nicer on the inside than you're going to have to spend more as I'm sure you'll see on CL.

That's pretty standard pricing for LA. I don't understand how you think $1,000-1,500/mo for a studio or 1bd is "cheap".

Yeah...

I pay about 1500 a month for a one bedroom. That's about normal for a decent part of LA and would be considered exorbitant rent in 90% of the country.

Hollywood's a little cheaper because it used to be pretty gang and drug infested. Not sure if it is considered gentrified yet but it is a not a particularly dangerous place to live now. Lots of homeless, tourists can be annoying (but almost totally avoidable), the Boulevard has some seeding retail establishments - perhaps those things drive down rent a little bit compared to say, Los Feliz.

But still, I wouldn't consider the rent to be cheap, especially with places like the newish building at La Brea / Hollywood with 2k-3k per month rents for a 1 bedroom.

Seriously OP ar eyou a trust fund baby to come on here making statements like that
Unless you're comparing 1000 to NYC prices, that is not cheap for a studio

Central Hollywood (West of Gower, North of Sunset) has become pretty expensive, especially if you're in one of the newer buildings. Prices there match most of WeHo or West LA. East Hollywood is cheaper because it's not as nice. Simple as that.

Yeah true, Hollywood has also come a long way and is improving so it makes sense why it has become more expensive.
