When I lived in West LA as a student attending UCLA, my roommate has his car broken into. We called LAPD to come out and file a report and their attitude was basically "we don't care, it happens hundreds of times in this city". LAPD, at least back in the 80's, sucked.

Its all relative. Los Angeles is not some smaller town where they call SWAT if you jaywalk. Its not so convenient if you car gets violated, but come on... With all the really serious stuff that can happen in a huge metropolis, maybe something like that takes a back seat. And I doubt seriously that they actually replied with "we don't care", as opposed to your exaggerated frustration. I understand if you were. But maybe it is best not to expect the same as you would in a smaller jurisdiction when other people are being raped and killed across town?

Let's be realistic: If your car is broken into, what are the cops going to do? Are they supposed to get the detectives out there to dust your car for prints and run it through the national database because you left your iPod on the front seat and some druggie stole it for his next high?

The police's time and resources need to be spent on fighting actual life-and-death crimes, not on babysitting folks.
