if you live locally do you know whether any promotional or discounted tix available either one?

I think they would enjoy KBF and Disneyland and Magic Mountain. The younger one would like legoland.
The beach is the best entertainment per dollar.
Dodger game
Palm Springs Aerial Tram

Crowds and heat are the two biggest obstacles.

You should probably research online tips for each individual venue: arrive early, etc.

I've never visited Universal City, but took the shuttle several times up the hill to the Universal City Walk shopping center from the subway station, and can contribute this: if you decide on a Universal City visit, you might want to take the Red Line to get there. The shuttle starts across the street from the subway, and runs frequently. The kids might enjoy the subway nearly as much as some of the rides at Universal City.

I remember taking the Univ Tour when I was a kid and I enjoyed it. That was in the 1970s. Manhattan Beach to Univ Studios will probably be a lot of traffic before 10AM. Can be pretty hot too.

In my whole life, I've never really cared for Universal Studios. I like the actual amusement parks with RIDES. Universal is mainly a place to walk around & has shops.

I think your kids would love Knott's, Universal and Disneyland - all great parks.
