Hi,

My boyfriend and I just moved to LA from NY and may be looking to buy a house and start a family. We love some houses in Mount Washington, how bad is the commute to Santa Monica? We are freelancer editors and work everywhere from West Hollywood, to Burbank, to Santa Monica. Would living in Los Feliz/ Silver Lake be better? We like those areas also but they are more expensive. What would be the best route to take from MT Wash to Santa Monica? Thanks!

1. Search Button.
2. Map of Los Angeles.
3. Work where you live; live where you work.

You're facing the minimum of a 1 hour commute each WAY.

You don't have a lot of options regarding the route to take. The 110 to the 10 is about the only realistic way. Google maps says in traffic it can take about an hour and a half to get to Santa Monica.

I travel the 10 every morning, but I go east. Going west traffic is bumper to bumper from Santa Monica to downtown LA starting at about 6 am. Unless you plan on leaving REALLY early, before 5 am, and coming home mid-afternoon or REALLY late, after 8 pm, I would realistically plan on that hour and a half commute.

It also depends exactly where you are coming from and going. Santa Monica traffic itself can be brutal during rush hour. It can take 10-15 minutes to get through a single intersection at times.

Mount Washington is a good location if you are in the entertainment industry as it's centrally located to cool areas - 15 minutes to downtown, Pasadena, Burbank... Another nice thing is since you are way ahead of the people who commute into L.A. the traffic usually isn't that bad (depending on where you are headed) -although the 5 can be nasty as always. But there's off streets you can take so at least you are moving... Silver Lake and Los Feliz are expensive if you are looking to buy a single family house.

The bad thing is that it takes at least 45 minutes to Santa Monica... and there is no good way to get there that I know of. Good luck.

This information is really helpful for me, as I'm also thinking about moving to Mt. Washington... what's the commute like to Sunset and Vermont? The problem I see is that you have to take a LOT of side streets if you want to go locally... are the side streets just as bad as taking the highways?

Gold Line train to Union Station, transfer to the red line subway. Get off at Sunset and Vermont. Simple.

metro.net | Transit Services and Information for Los Angeles County for station locations (there are 3 in or very close to Mt Washington).
