I've just met a lot of half Asian half white people from the west coast. I had a half white half Korean gf from Seattle at one time and a good friend from Tacoma who was also half/half. I've met a lot of ppl like them in CA.

Houston and L.A. are actually comparable in physical size:

Los Angeles Urbanized Area: 1736 sq miles
Houston UA: 1660 sq miles

The HUGE difference is in population:

Los Angeles: 12.1 million
Houston: 4.9 million

More everything. Plus, world class cities tend to be very crowded and very expensive.

Thems just the breaks.

Oh and L.A. = lower crime rate than Houston. That's one problem L.A. doesn't have more of.

That is one thing I've noticed too. The crime rate here in LA is drastically low in comparison to other smaller cities like New Orleans, Memphic and Houston. And our economy is worse too.

I read an article written by a Rice University professor that pretty much analyzed the Houston hype as a half truth. Yes, it's doing better economically but while job growth is up and even wages are up, poverty is still going up. Basically, while more jobs grew in Houston than LA, the wages for a lot of of those jobs only grew by small margin and was not enough to meet the growing COL. Where wages were comparable to COL were in the job growth sectors dealing with professional/managerial, oil/gas and medical. Those are the people really feeling the boom. The outskirts of Houston like on the Northside is a no man's land of utter lawlessness. Growth in the city is very limited to private sector development and job growth is centered around a few sectors like the ones I listed. The rest of the job growth is largely service sector, low wage work.

It doesn't matter as much if it's low wage work if you can rent an apartment for $500 a month , pay no state income taxes, etc. Not all jobs in L.A are high paying either. Many many people working at your local fast food joint aren't making the big bucks for example.

The areas where you can afford 500 bucks rent are really bad areas riddled with crime. People would rather go out into the white flight areas and pay a little more for peace of mind. I remember being a leasing agent for a small nice apartment complex out near the burbs in Houston. People of all stripes would flock to it and say they were willing to pay 200 bucks more in rent to avoid the bad areas where rent is super cheap.

If you actually make a little bove the average in Houston then you're golden anywhere in the city. So it's not like people are taking these low wage jobs and living in nice areas around the city.

And STILL he doesn't get that people are willing to pay more to live in a city like Los Angeles. Like San Francisco, Boston, San Diego, London, Osaka, Hong Kong.

Going strictly by CoL implies that all cities have identical desirability. They don't, sorry.

Yeah but paying more for an equally crappy area sucks

The fact is most people just can't afford to live in the nice parts of la

Unless they live with roommates , which isn't very desirable either.

Might be hard for people that make high salaries to grasp this .

I agree with you that people are willing to pay more if they can afford it .. Of course some people just don't let la and would refuse to live here even if they can afford a nice area .
