I always seemed to live near a Thriftys and would enjoy double scoop cones, espec on a hot summer day, all for under a buck! Now, I go to a Rite Aid, and the same double cone costs $2.49!! No wonder there's nobody lining up to buy that ice cream anymore, at least when I've been.

People's tastes in ice cream have changed. All that artificial flavoring, corn syrup and cheap fats aren't as appetizing as when no one knew anything better. Ben & Jerry's it's not.

Yeah, but the prices of a lot of things have gone up a lot i'm sure. When was this? I don't think Thriftys have been around for over 10 years?...

Also $2.49 is pretty cheap for a double cone. I'm sure 31 flavors or pretty much any ice cream place is going to be a lot more than this.

There are places serving tiny little cups of gelato for $5 or so.

Do you really think $2.49 is expensive for icecream these days?

I'm sure they still do alright selling it or they would stop right...It's a business not a charity.

Also Ben & Jerry's is a different type of thing...and much more expensive..

I don't think an occasional cup of ice cream will kill anyone.

They certainly are lining up at Farrell's to pay twice as much for that same scoop:

Yeah, no doubt. I'd get my Double cone (or triple if I was feeling it) at the one in Highland Park on Fig (Figueroa) and York. Those were the days..

Interesting article. Interesting about Farrell's serving it. I've never been there before.

I think Thrifty ice cream is pretty good for the price.

Not too sure if many of the more expensive places are that much better honestly.

OP asks if anyone misses Thrifty's ice cream as if they don't make it anymore. Where else can you get a scoop of ice cream for $1.69?,. I'd love to know.

I think I had a birthday party at Farrell's in San Dimas in the early/mid-80s. I haven't been since the reopenings.

I agree. Thrifty is definitely good ice cream for the price. I'm a fan of the cylindrical scoops too. Reminds me of my childhood. Now I'll have to stop by a rite aid tomorrow.

Yeah this thread is making me want some of that RiteAiD/Thrifty Ice cream.

I always thought it was interesting that they kept the Thrifty name for the ice cream...but I guess Rite AID icecream would sound kind of weird...plus the Thrifty brand has been around for a long time.

OP...you are going to make the sales go up by posting this thread.. then there WILL be a line next time you go!

I loved those as a kid -- it was a great treat to get a double at the Thrifty's on Wilshire in SM.
