It hasn't always been the case in L.A. Certainly it wasn't the case pre-Prop 13.

Even long after Prop 13 and busing, and long after LAUSD became synonomous with corruption, dysfunction, violence, and pedo-teachers, there were many places with at least decent schools in the L.A. area which weren't that expensive. There are still a very few, but the number is shrinking due to the insane cost of housing.

No ,it hasn't actually because housing in the decent areas never used to be as high as they are now versus wages. When a house goes from 300k to 600k (or more) for example that prices a ton of people out. That's what it's done in 10yr or less, and wages have been pretty much the same during that time.

Where were they? In the 1960s my parents and their friends still had to go way outside of L.A. to find affordable homes in areas with decent schools.

Nearly the entire SFV, most of what was built up suburbs to the east and south of Los Angeles...for starters.

I don't know the SF Valley, but in the SG Valley and L.A., that wasn't the case. Good public schools, not mediocre.

To live a normal life? Way exaggerated.
To live a life where you host crazy parties with dozens of people snorting lines of coke? Min. $300K sounds reasonable.

When you do the math though , having a modest house in an expensive area and a family does add up. If not $350k how much do you think you'd need. I'm not talking owning a mansion and ferraris or doing coke. But a 3 or 4 bedroom house (something under 2000sq feet even) a safe area. New cars, but not extravagant sports cars. A two week annual vacation for the family. Eating out at a decent place occasionally with your family. How much do you think that costs in L.A? ....

Do you include private schools? That's the real kicker.

La Mirada, Lakewood, West Covina, numerous neighborhoods further out...about $125k is the line if you are buying. Around $100k if you are renting and places with high home prices but lower rents such as Torrance and Burbank become accessible.
