The Pasadena library system's computers are all running XP with IE7. Of course it's getting to be outdated and I asked a managing librarian if they might upgrade their computers. He said it's not a high priority right now (I could see that coming from a mile away).

Does your public library system use XP or something newer? If it does, I could use that as an example, the next time I complain. I have my own computer at home but sometimes I use theirs to use the printers.

I believe Microsoft will stop supporting XP in about a year, so, uh, yeah, there may be an upgrade, but at the last moment as our public institutions often don't get with it. In fact, Microsofts planned end of support is what seems to be driving folks to Win 7, even with its inherent PITA's for enterprise users, especially with old peripherals that many govt. depts. still use. On the good side Win 7 is really quite good now and as pleasant an experience as XP has been. It is Win 8 that can be the NIGHTMARE OS.

Why does it matter what the library is using?

WinXP is one of the best versions of the Windows OS... I don't see a problem with a library using it as long as its programs can still load webpages and documents correctly.

WinXP would probably be faster and more stable than Win7 or Win8 on older office-spec computers.

This. I hate Windows in general, but XP is a solid OS for these uses. And libraries don't really have a need to upgrade all those computers.

The problem is that XP can only run IE7 or IE8 and some newer pages aren't compatible.
I agree XP was one of the best OSs.

I just bought a new computer last week, and it has windows 8, and I need to see if I can take it off my computer and install xp.
I really don't like windows 8, and hope I can do this somehow.
Bob.

I'm still using WXP on this desktop I built 9 years ago, and there are no plans to change that. I don't care what ver of IE I'm limited to, because I don't use it.

I work for a public library system in Southern California, and at the branch I work at, our computers for the patron's have Windows XP. Even some staff computers still have Windows XP while some just finally got updated to Windows 7. Updating computers for libraries is expensive due to having to use vendors, instead of just buying some cheap computers from Best Buy or elsewhere. Not to mention library budgets have been under enormous pressure for the past five years.

I can empathize with your desire to replace 8 with another version of Windows but I am not sure if XP would be ideal for newer machines. I'd say, stick with 7, most any vendor provides device drivers for 7 as well but not XP.
As much as I loved XP and personally wouldn't care if MS stopped supporting it, sadly for future compatibility and usage, installing Windows 7 would make much more sense.
