i'm in ohio right now, but after i graduate i want to move to houston, tx or los angeles. i plan to do law enforcement then move up to detective.

how expensive is it to live in this city, especially for someone who just graduated? i will most likely find an apartment.

are law enforcement jobs hard to find in LA?

how important is it to have transportation?
------

if law enforcement will be hard for me to find, i do have a backup plan to do vet tech school.

You can easily afford an apartment.

Most LAPD and LA Sheriffs do not live in the city. Most work a 3/12 schedule and live in suburbs 30-80 miles away. For the smaller cities and jurisdictions, it varies and a lot do live in or near the cities they patrol.

The difference is that homes in LA are either out of price range of cops or they are in unsafe areas. And almost all the schools are awful. It's different in the smaller towns.

Right now there's not a lot of hiring....most departments hiring to attrition at best.

thank you

what would you say the cost of apartments are? i would pay between 400-700 at the most. are there any affordable apartments in the safer areas?

I won't graduate until 2015 since i just switched to criminal justice. so, hopefully employment looks good by then.

You couldn't find a one bedroom apartment in the city of Riverside, 60 miles East of LA, for less than $800 a month. LA's rents will be around $1,000-1,400 a month, with the lower prices being in terrible neighborhoods. Your utility bill will be around $60-90 for electricity alone. As for water, sewage, gas... just pray that it's included in your rent.

Housing in California is incredibly expensive.

ok, wow...would a little job before the academy help with rent and utilities? i will most likely have a little money saved up but i'm not sure about the minimum wage in cali.

PLEASE do not major in CJ.

Major in something useful to fall back on when (statistically) your career in LE doesn't go your way.

The academy, and field training process will teach you what you need to know. A degree is certainly helpful, but any common degree will do.

Not to be discouraging - you're pursuing a teriffic career - but there are a million hurdles between you and a badge, and having a useful degree is worthwhile. Trust me.
