Can a single parent live off of $100k salary in Southern California? I have a high school aged daughter and I will have a Master's degree from Northeastern University by June of 2014. My daughter and I want to move to California next year and I noticed that given my current skill set in HR and my future Master's degree in HR that I could possibly be an HR Manager making around $100k. Is this affordable if all we want to do is rent right now? We would prefer the SoCal area or not more than a 45 minute drive away from Los Angeles.

Yes, you could live pretty decently on that salary. Los Angeles proper is a huge city and 45 minutes away could mean many areas.

Yes no problem at all, though you may be a renter rather than a buyer.

Definitely especially renting .. You could also most likely get a condo in decent area as well.

Average household income here is like 56k

Yes, you could be very comfortable on that salary for a family of two. Both renting or buying a 2-3 bedroom home, in an area with top performing schools, within 45-minutes of LA could be an option.

No, an MBA (if from non-top school) + some lower HR position does not automatically get you into a manager/director position.

You've got someone asking for information on SoCal, not job advice. Obviously she has done her due diligence.
