Check out some bars too. There will be people there you can meet and get to know there. Some other places are gyms.

I've been here 5 months or so. Having a roommate gave me a built-in social network, but going to organised events helped out a bunch too.

Isn't meetup.com for people who are socially awkward?

Not really. While I don't doubt that, they can be good for getting people together that share a common interest and otherwise would never have met.

I thought LA would be much harder to make friends, but it's quite easy depending on the person.

I don't think so. There seems to be a few weirdos that sometime shows up, but I found most people in the social groups to be decent and are made up of people from all types of situation. Some are new in town, some are from broken relationships, or broken friendships, or wanting a new social group.

Check out the site and you'll find its merely a worldwide site for people with like minded interests to meet up,
I'd question any future information coming from a source that says Meetup.com is a place for the socially awkward, its exactly the opposite in my opinion ..

The easiest way for you to really click with people is through a class...because it many cases, you are forced to work in groups or pairs. Take a class at a local community college....dance, cooking, yoga, etc. It is the easiest way to click with people. The second idea I would suggest is to participate in travel groups...you can really click with others who like to travel and see the world (these type of people are usually down-to-earth and open minded).

Hang out at a Starbucks or a coffee shop type of enviroment for a while. You could see people who regularly go to a coffee shop, and it's an easy way to make friends.
