In our housing search, my wife and I found some great looking Craftsman homes in the area around Expo/Western, that are literally a stones throw from the metro station. Not sure what that neighborhood is called...Mapping LA calls it "Expo Park", but the actual Exposition Park is a good mile east.

Can anyone speak to the safety of that area? MappingLA shows some thefts in the area, but it shows around the same amount for Koreatown where we currently live, and our neighborhood feels perfectly safe to walk around in.

That area is not great at all. Although it's relatively close to USC, it still has a ways to go before it improves. Lots of prostitution, gangs, and open-air drug deals. You certainly wouldn't want to be walking around there at night.

The Expo and Blue lines go through some hoods that never left the '90s.

At least that's my observation from inside the train... I wouldn't really want to step out and explore them on foot.

How about just north of there in Jefferson Park? Looking at another place there on 27th St. The homes in that neighborhood are unbelievable...best collection of well-maintained craftsmans that I've ever seen.

Unfortunately that area is even worse. It doesn't start to really improve until you get to the north side of the 10.

Thanks.

Just found this thread on Redfin with different opinions though:
West Adams/Jefferson Park Safe? - Redfin Real Estate Forums

Realizing that the best way to know for sure would be to just hang out in the area on foot and see for myself how it feels, as people have wildly divergent views on what feels safe or not safe.

Check it out for yourself. Check out the crime maps and see where most of the crime in the area takes place. It's probably not that bad if you have the right mindset for it. If you move in expecting a super walkable area where you can keep the doors unlocked and windows open while you watch your 60" LED in full sight of everyone, probably not the right neighborhood for you.

If you have a reliable car to get to shopping, have a garage or gate to secure your cars and your house is going to have a security system, I think you'll be fine.

These areas vary by street. Some blocks have great pride of ownership and may be relatively walkable. Others blocks are full of rentals and quite unsafe. Just know what to look for.

Thanks, yby1. I'd definitely do a security system and probably a gate for the driveway as well.

The streets we've looked on so far do seem to have pride of ownership- well maintained homes and owners out mowing their lawns. But agreed that its block by block. Same goes for where we're currently living in K-town. We're on Serrano a couple blocks up from Olympic where there are some upscale apartment buildings and condos in the $500k-$1M range. Literally one block away on Hobart it is much more downscale and there has been some gang issues. LA seems to be patchy in general with the exception of the Westside.
