Mar Vista and Culver City are nearby, and you'd still be within walking distance to the beach. And they are CHEAPER.

I am looking for a one bedroom apartment in the $1500 - $2000 range. I realize that is on the lower end of the spectrum, but that's all I can really afford.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!
The best deals are rarely advertised my dude. The old lady or man that hasn't really raised the rent and just wants to rent it out can be found not by the internet but by driving around and getting numbers and calling people. I realized this years ago by listening to people and from the situation I'm in. My wife and I pay $1300 for a 2 bedroom in Palms (West LA) and it was $1200 when she moved in here with roommates that was in 2003! This was more based on time but you can find that old lady if you drive around. Just don't expect to be living around the Promenade or Abbot Kinney.

That's also based on luck, and you don't always have the luxury of waiting out for that extra good deal. When you do find it? Tomorrow? The next year? The next decade?

A lot of those are low income housing, you have to make less than $60k/year to rent those. Which is crazy.. who would spend $1700 / month on an apartment when they're only making $60k??

I'm not saying it's a bad salary.. for an apartment to be affordable, the tenant's salary should be more than 35 to 40 times the monthly rent.

The proper term is income-restricted. You can't make MORE than $60k. So unless you're right below that salary $1700 a month in rent much more of a stretch (and you better not get a raise!) I can guarantee you these income restricted rents are below the market rate. That's the whole reason Santa Monica has them in the first place.

Under your definition of 'affordable', nothing is affordable
