Hi everyone!

I'm relocating to LA in a few weeks and have some questions.

Ok, for one I will be working in Downtown (zip code 90017). I initially thought about living in downtown to make commuting easier but honestly being a single female in my twenties I'm a little scared to live there alone and parking seems to be a big issue. I'm now looking into places like silver lake and pasadena. How bad will my commute be from those places? Do you have any recommendations? Also I'm looking at a place on Alexandria Ave and Clinton Street, hows that area? The realtor states its between silver lake and koreatown but I don't know much about the area. Thanks in advance everyone!

Sounds like you are ready to go. Pasadena would be a good choice. You mentioned parking, does that mean you will have a car? For the record, Downtown is quite safe and it's not the ghost town it once was. Plenty of girls your age living there.

If you move to Pasadena you could take the Gold Line rapid transit to work downtown.

Pasadena is great. I'm a singe female and I'd live there in a hearbeat but my commute would be a nightmare...

I wouldn't recommend you live by Alexandria and Clinton. It's sort of in between East Hollywood and Koreatown, bordering the western edge of Silver Lake. Not saying it's the worst area, but you can definitely do better if budget allows. Speaking of which, Pasadena would be a great option for you... safe, fairly affordable, lots to do, and close to work.

Pasadena south of the 210 and Glendale would both be decent options, as would downtown. If you have the money to avoid it, Alexandria and Clinton (East Hollywood) wouldn't be my top choice. Silver Lake could also be a good option for a 20 something female, as would Los Feliz and parts of Hollywood. The Los Feliz and Hollywood options would give you the opportunity to commute in on the Red Line to downtown, which a lot of people find less stressful than driving. Some companies will pay for part of a monthly transit pass.

If you're new to LA, Mapping L.A. - Los Angeles Times can give you an idea about neighborhood borders. These borders aren't set in stone and people may debate what neighborhood a street is part of. Some smaller neighborhoods are not listed in the maps (Melrose Hill, Franklin Hills), but it's at least useful when listing agents try to claim something is in Silver Lake or Los Feliz when it's actually East Hollywood, or Echo Park when it's actually Westlake.
