Hello Everybody,

I am considering a job on Vandenberg Air Force Base. I was stationed at Vandenberg 15 years ago, when I was much younger and single, but I'm wondering what the area is like today. Where are the best and worst communities to raise a family? Are there any good private schools in the area, if so what do they cost? Are there other significant costs I should consider? I have heard horror stories about California utility bills and taxes, but can't imagine they are too much higher than my current location, Washington, DC.

This isn't a job I have to take as I already have a good paying job out east, but I think it could be a good career move and positive lifestyle change for my family. I am kind of burnt out on my current job, and the family is open to a change in atmosphere.

I am willing to pay around $3000 (give or take) a month for a decent home within a 30-45 minute commute. Living in a nice community with good private schools nearby is more important than saving $500 on my monthly rent or living 10 minutes closer to work. At the same time, I am not opposed to living in a place like Vandenberg Village or Orcutt if they are comfortable places to live.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated!

Jim

I don't know much about the area right around Vandenberg, but I do know that Solvang, which is about 30 miles away is a fun little touristy town with some kid friendly activities.. like feeding ostriches!

Buellton, Solvang, Orcutt.

Lompoc is closer but the schools aren't as high performing.

While AG is one of the nicer areas on the central coast, that is a bit of a hellacious commute.

My dad works at the Base and we grew up in Orcutt. I would recommend south Santa Maria / Orcutt. I'd avoid Lompoc and the northwest part of Santa Maria.

If you don't mind being sort of in the middle of nowhere, look into Santa Ynez / Buellton / Solvang.
