It depends on where your job is. If you live and work in SM, then it is OK. If you have to commute downtown or to Long Beach, it's horrible.

i lived in SM and commuted to century city for a few years and i never felt stranded. the beach area offered everything i needed, so outside of work, i had no reason to travel east of the 405 all that often. if you plan on spending your free time throughout the city, a more central location may be a better option for you. having said that, your best bet is stay close to work and drive to other parts of town in your free time.

If you live in Santa Monica, it's best to work in Santa Monica...maybe West LA.

I don't live there now but did for a very very long time, and yes you do feel a little isolated. Luckily for most people there's everything you cuold possibly need in santa monica. And for the most part, if you are commuting to the valley or most eastern areas, you are going AGAINST the flow of traffic (since most people are going westbound), so the 10 freeway is actually pretty fast till la cienega or la brea, and the 405 north from wilshire is pretty okay.

I've never felt stranded living in Santa Monica. I do feel like I'm close to the best L.A has to offer.

I feel a little stranded living in Pasadena, I can see how you would feel a little isolated in Santa Monica. But it does hold true that both areas have enough going on that you don't really need to leave them.

I was going to ask the same thing. My big thing is concerts. Im sure SM has a lot of nightclubs and small venues but don't all big name artists perform on the other side of the city? (Not that I don't totally love indie music too.)

I can't think of many bands performing on the westside. I mean well known ones. I think bands used to play more at Pauley Pavillion at UCLA , but I havent heard of many. maybe thats because of that Westwood homeowners not wanting those darn rock n rollers in their hood?
It's definitely more towards Hollywood area - Hollywood Bowl, Fonda, etc or Silverlake/Echo park for the up and coming bands,. Even the scene around Sunset Strip is pretty dead as far as well known/quality acts..
