I've found a couple of affordable places in that area.
90025 is a good area. If you find a place in your range live there. Hollywood Blvd and Wilshire aren't that far but a little difficult to connect via public transit

I’m a recent college graduate but I don’t really have any work experience, except for a summer job I did 3 years.

I’m moving to work in the music industry and plan to take some weekend classes and look for internships. I’m in the process of getting a guard card so I can work security since the field is always hiring. I’m basically wondering if the Westside would be better, or would Central LA (Hollywood area) be better?

I’ve spoken to a couple security companies along with staffing agencies that asked me to call them back for an interview once I actually moved, so I was planning to do that. I’ve gotten about 10-15 calls over the past 2 months for an interview at a bunch of other companies, but none of them were willing to do an over the phone interview. So before I moved, I’d actually have 4-8 interviews set up, but I wasn’t sure exactly which area would be better to live in. I’m not worried about nightlife or entertainment since that’s not my focus right now. I just want somewhere safe and near the bus.

All suggestions are appreciated.
The problem with getting a job as a security guard is you have very little say as to where they post you. Those companies compete for clients all over the place. Close-in, cozy gigs go to the people with seniority. You might be told to take a midnight shift guarding a warehouse in Lancaster. Most guard companies won't hire anyone without a valid license and a dependable car, for that reason.

Instead of becoming a security guard, look for a job near where you wind up living, one where you can bike or bus to, fast-food, janitorial, whatever is available.

Good luck!

I just found a living room for around $680 in the 90024 area about a 1 mile from Westwood Village. It's on Ohio Ave and is only 2 blocks from Westwood Blvd. I actually got a response from a security company in the area telling me to call them when I get in the city to arrange an interview.

I don't really care when or where I work as long as I can get there by a bus. With the wages they pay, I think it's ridiculous for them to think most people can afford a car. Plus I'm only doing security so I can land interviews before I move. I have every intention to look for better jobs once I move.

The guard companies ( or any other minimum wage employers) don't CARE if you can afford a car or not. They DO care that you show up for work.

Again, good luck.

That's just how it is these days. Employers expect the world of you, even if you're only making minimum wage.

I'm gonna set up some appointments with regular staffing agencies anyway. I plan to cover all my bases before I move.
