I’m moving to LA in about a month and I’m trying to decide which area to move to. I’m moving from across the country without a job. I have enough money to cover 4-5 months worth of rent and food as long as the rent, including utilities is below $800. I’ve seen a lot of ads on Craigslist looking for roommates at that price. I’m a recent college graduate but I don’t really have any work experience, except for a summer job I did 3 years.

I’m moving to work in the music industry and plan to take some weekend classes and look for internships. I’m in the process of getting a guard card so I can work security since the field is always hiring. I’m basically wondering if the Westside would be better, or would Central LA (Hollywood area) be better?

I’ve spoken to a couple security companies along with staffing agencies that asked me to call them back for an interview once I actually moved, so I was planning to do that. I’ve gotten about 10-15 calls over the past 2 months for an interview at a bunch of other companies, but none of them were willing to do an over the phone interview. So before I moved, I’d actually have 4-8 interviews set up, but I wasn’t sure exactly which area would be better to live in. I’m not worried about nightlife or entertainment since that’s not my focus right now. I just want somewhere safe and near the bus.

All suggestions are appreciated.

By central LA, do you mean Mid-City? If that;s what you mean, then I think it would be a better fit because there is easier access to Hollywood, where most of the music buz is located.

Yeah I was referring to the Hollywood area. I'll update my first post

Hollywood is pretty much going to be cheaper in terms of everything. Also has better public transit.

Great. Is West LA safer?

Sure, but it's not like Hollywood isn't.

With your budget, be aware that you will be sharing a room. So two to a one bedroom, or three/four to a two bedroom. MAYBE a private room in a house if you're lucky. "Central" LA in general is going to be more affordable.

I've seen a couple private rooms and living rooms for my price range in the 90025 area, but in the 90024 area, the same prices were only shared rooms. I'll probably just try and go to Central LA since majority of the security companies I spoke to are located there. Thanks.

I was actually looking into the Hollywood area for a room, but there's really only 1 security company in the area. Majority of the companies I found are on Wilshire Blvd. I didn't know until now that Wilshire Blvd was so far from Hollywood Blvd. Now I'm thinking about just looking for a place in West LA in the 90025 area. I've found a couple of affordable places in that area.

Harrier considers "Central LA" to be Downtown, even if it is 3 miles from the city limits.
