If I move and don't plan on getting a car, will I still have to get a license within 10 days of moving to the state?

And if you don't get one within 10 days, do I have to pay some fine?

The law is 10 days, but no one really finds out unless you get pulled over. Get it done in a reasonable time frame and don't get in any trouble with the law and you'll be fine.

Thanks but doesn't really answer my question. I stated I wouldn't have a car, so getting pulled over cannot happen to me.

Of course you don't. I've known people that have moved here and haven't gotten one in a month. You have nothing to worry about.

When I moved back to California, I made an appointment with DMV the first week I was back. I was able to get my license that week. I did not realize you had to take a written test, which I passed on the first try.

You probably should just apply for a State Identification Card - Identification ID Card Information

Thanks for the responses. I'll probably just wait until I actually sign a lease so I have a CA address since when I move, I'll probably be sub-leasing at first.

A State ID is easy to get if you're looking to have actual California ID right away. They mail it and say 4-6 weeks, but I got mine within a week. And they don't ask for proof of address.

Ok cool. I just figured if I was gonna take the time to go to the DMV, I might as well just apply for the license. Only thing I don't feel like doing is studying for the written test.

You can make an appointment. I was in and out within 10-15 minutes. Very impressed.
