Downtown and the Greater L.A Region has so much potential...I truly see a lot of growth in high rise development or gentrification for the future.

L.A just keeps getting better as time goes by in my opinion

I am not Asian or Asian-American but a friend of mine is Korean-American. We went to hang out in K-Town recently and it was DEAD. Not like it was say 10 or 15 years ago. We chatted with one of the club owners. He stated clearly: Downtown LA stole K-Town's thunder. Nothing wrong with living there but for a lively, walkable nightlife area, downtown LA beats it by a mile.

Definitely check it out yourself before you make a decision. It really depends on what you are looking for. Downtown LA is where the action is but it is louder and there are more homeless people than in K-Town. Just stay away from Skid Row in DTLA and you'll be fine. There is no reason to go there as you noted earlier (a truly shameful stain on LA's civic culture. It will never go away in our lifetimes). That said, the explosion of development in DTLA over the past 5 to 10 years is insane. The current slate of projects are only taking up another notch.

Nice. To be honest, I doubt the homeless issue will bother me much. I come across homeless people every day in NYC. It's just that I read about the issue in LA and how out of control it has gotten so I was initially worried. As long as they don't bother me too much i'm ok.

Another question, are most of the apartment buildings in downtown retrofitted for big quakes? I'd be a bit nervous living in an older building.

I think if they are still standing they were built up to code. After SF got wrecked by an earthquake in the early 20th century California became serious about building everything up to a certain code.
