In the past few years downtown has become quite the focal point for all things urban. At one time this was a foreign concept for Angelinos who live in a city made up mostly of distinct and interesting neighborhoods. Now, even Hollywood, only 6 miles from downtown, is experiencing that urban vibe, with new hotels and apartment building sprouting up everywhere.

Parking lots and empty spaces are disappearing all over the city , not just in downtown and Hollywood. Some people call this progress others hate it. I'm in between. In my neighborhood there has been so much development I yearn for the days of old, when I could drive to the super market, half a mile away, with no worries about traffic. Now, between 3 PM and 7 PM it's bumper to bumper traffic.

Will someday "the entire city/county be completely centered around" downtown LA? I don't believe so. But certainly more people have taken notice and are moving to downtown in droves. Especially young folks. Even more see it as a destination, just like heading to Venice for the day, or Universal Studios, or Santa Monica, even Disneyland....LOL.

With the addition of Grand Park and Los Angeles State Historic Park in Chinatown, as a place for concerts, civic events, and other public gatherings, the appeal of downtown's has greatly increased.

In addition, public transit in and out of downtown, served by Metro Red, Blue, Expo, Purple and Gold train lines, has made it easier for folks to visit downtown without the worries of parking. This was most evident during the recent Women's March, when nearly 592,000 riders used Metro trains and buses to come downtown for the event.
Don't forget Metrolink which also brings thousands of people to Downtown daily.

Was visiting from the east coast last week, downtown has definitely improved in a lot of areas from when I was there 15 years ago when it was a ghost town. I wasn't expecting much but was impressed - though wasn't expecting it to be like Manhattan. I took the gold line from Pasadena and glad i did. There are still some parts that were empty or sketchy when I walked between Little Tokyo to Pershing Square/downtown and LA LiVe. Think I did end up walking through skid row for a bit but found my way out since it was getting dark (I use to live in Newark in college). Some parts South if Union Station, seemed empty but safe at least in the daytime. Downtown will probably be completely built out in 5-10 years.

Going south on Broadway past 10th street, it still looks like a ghost town, at least in the morning and
at night. Lots of warehouses there.

I think that might be a good thing? Venice Beach on the other hand, people are fighting to keep it
from becoming another Santa Monica, and I like to have choice: Clean, sterile, and mild Santa Monica,
or gritty, wild, and weird Venice
