Despite the traffic, the drive often takes the same amount of time and frankly it is more comfortable.
I have never had such issues with the Metro I've never felt ill at ease or like I was in any sort of danger, even when taking the Blue Line, or a bus that went through a less-than-ideal area (like taking the bus through South Central or the like, which I have before, as I grew up (and my mom still lives) in South LA near Inglewood).

As for the Red Line vs. the 101, the Red Line has always been much faster for me. The one time my friend and I attempted to drive down the 101 was on a Sunday morning, 'round 10:30, 11am...he picked me up at my place in Van Nuys, so we hopped on the 101 around Sepulveda. An hour and a half later, we were just starting to enter Hollywood, and our goal was to get to the Original Pantry Cafe downtown. I would assume that such traffic was an anomaly (which I do think it was), but the few times I have had to traverse that stretch of the 101 otherwise (usually in tow of someone else), it has taken roughly 45 minutes. Not all that much longer than 35 minutes, aye, but still longer and not as direct. I'll take the Red Line over driving any day of the week

Parking is a big hassle at north hollywood station. If you get there around 8 am, forget the free parking, you wont even find paid parking on the street and its crowded too.
