New York not gives tax credits of up to 1/3rd the film's budget for films and tv productions filmed in New York. That's why shows like the Tonight Show returned to New York.

The folks over here two hours from me sure are excited to be working in Georgia. Alas, a lot of TV shows that I've had connections to, last month, were shuttered or delayed for days due to cold, snow, and ice. Would that happen in LA? I think not.

I'd rather be in LA than just about anywhere else in this country, particularly during this long long winter. It's better even in the summer. Atlanta and Georgia can be awfully sultry and miserable in July.

And let's not even raise the lose of the porn filming business from the Valley since LA saw fit to require condoms. LA's loss was Vegas' gain.

The loss of production is not a good thing. Yes, the studios are based here (most of which are owned by East Coast media conglomerates, save Disney). L.A.'s entertainment industry is increasingly just the corporate offices with finance, human resources, business planning, and execs. Many of the jobs in Los Angeles that support the film industry rely on location shooting. Visual Effects is leaving as well. Of the 1,000+ visual effect artistis working on Iron Man 3 for example, only 231 were based in California. 148 of those worked for Digital Domain, that is closing its Venice office and moving to Vancouver. California has only 1 visual effect studio with 1,000+ employees and it is Industrial Light & Magic (with most of its employees in the Bay Area).

Make-up artists, film crew, visual effects, costume, catering companies that serve the on location photo shoot, etc... are the ones getting screwed.

Per a Film L.A. in depth report released today, California has an 8% share of the top 25 films released in 2013. California ranks 4th in on location employment and spending after Lousiana, Canada, and the UK.

At the end of the day, it is just globalization and not really that surprising. L.A. will continue to be the principal city for film, but a lot of people are going to continue struggling to find work with less production in L.A. itself.

The loss in the movie business is also due to globalization. Movies are increasingly being filmed in India, Eastern Europe, etc.

They are also going for realism in films, and California does not have the physical location for every type of film. It's only natural that the actually job of filming has scattered all over.

But producers are not leaving Los Angeles en masse. Nor are the agencies, the studios, the Guilds, and the huge support infrastructure around the film industry. All that is in Los Angeles.

No one moves to Michigan, Louisiana, or any of these other states for a career in the film industry. For that you go to Los Angeles.

The only other halfway decent city in the country for the film industry is NYC (And LA is better, no doubt).

As for the studios, let's see.

Disney is based in LA.
Viacom (owns Paramount) is headquartered in NY.
Comcast (owns NBC Universal) is based in Philadelphia.
News Corp (owns Fox) is actually Australian
Time Warner is out of New York
Lions Gate is Canadian
Dreamworks is Los Angeles based
Sony is owned by a Japanese Company
NetFlix now producers its original content (its out of Los Gatos, CA)
Amazon (also producing its original content) is out of Seattle, WA

Plus there's a growing bunch of independent producers that do business everywhere.

Sure they can. Film crew jobs pay pretty good wages and would generate increased tax revenue.
