Im from new york amd thinking about coming out here for school. I dont want to compare it to ny Im just curious to know if the cities/neighborhoods of LA each have their own character, type of people, culture. For example like where im from in new york soho manhatten is reeal artsy while the financial district is more business orientated, or like in brooklyn ny williamsburg is full of hypsters in stylish clothing n stuff and bed Stuyvesant is like the hood. If I could I would love to get some descriptions on the different cities of LA in terms of What the people, crime rate, fashion, ethnicity are like in comparison to the rest of the city. Like what part of LA has gangs which is the artys part is there a business./financial area, where do all the tourists go, which pqrts have a lot events and parties?stuff like that and I know LA is REALLY big so this may be asking for much but I would def appreciate it.

LA is very culturally diverse. A place like Brentwood nothing in common with somewhere like Watts. And theres other cities like Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Culver City, and Inglewood. Which are bacically LA neighborhoods as they are surrounded by the city of LA.

The touristy parts.
Santa Monica
Beverly Hills
Hollywood

Artsy areas
Venice
Los Feliz

Hipster
Silverlake

Gang Areas
Most of South Los Angeles
Boyle Heights
East Los Angeles
Wilmington
San Pedro

Business/Financial
Downtown
Century City
Westwood

The fashion on the Westside/Hollywood is more trendy while the rest of city is more Urban/Hood. And the South Bay is more stereotypically Californian Beach style and Bro. Who are the equilvant to Guidos in So Cal.

LA is a disconnected city which feels like multiple cities rolled into one. The Westside is mostly White/Jewish/Persian. While the rest of LA is mostly Hispanic with a large number of Blacks in South LA, and Koreans in Koreatown. Most people on the Westside dont go east of the 405, while theres a Hispanic resence throughout the city.

LA is generally segregated by race and socioeconomic class. Different areas will have a different feel and vibe and different people inhabiting the area.

I find this Westsiders don't go east of the 405 to be false. Westwood, Century City, Beverly Hills, most of Culver City are all east of the 405.

This diversity is one of LA's greatest strengths, imo. I'm sure NYC beats it here, but LA is far above the third city.

I would add in Glendale and Woodland Hills as financial/business centers.

Not all of Hollywood is touristy, imo. A place like Sunset and Vine has a different vibe than Hollywood and Vine. You see a lot of creative types and entertainment execs instead of tourists looking at the Walk of Fame.

Hollywood neighborhood is also a giant training ground for actors, musicians, writers, directors and film crew people.

Studio City has a very "Hollywood" type crowd to me as well. Mostly young, people just getting started. I like that area a lot, especially around Laurel Canyon.

this is true. however, NYC isn't much different (you can look at census data to confirm this) and may in fact be worse in this regard.

like NYC, LA is also fairly socially segregated along racial or ethnic lines - people tend to hang out more or less with their own kind. however, things are a bit better in LA than in NYC i think. there are places where you can go where you do see a wide variety of people all hanging out together (even tho the individual groups present may be homogenous).
