Curbed LA is reporting that the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council Governing Board will vote tonight to, once and for all, decide to embrace or reject the characterization of Silver Lake as being LA's "Eastside". Apparently, there is not much suspense as to how they'll vote:

Silver Lake Will Vote Tonight on Whether or Not it's the Eastside - Neighborhood Watch - Curbed LA

Some observations:

1) Silver Lake and it's neighbors are OBVIOUSLY on the "east side" of LA- just fold a map in half and see for yourself. Is there a distinction between being on the east side, and being "the Eastside"?

2) The Eastside is not East LA- that is an entirely distinct location, that isn't even in the City of Los Angeles. The eastern LA neighborhood of Boyle Hgts, however, IS part of the Eastside. The LA River runs through the Eastside, but does not form a boundary.

3) There is something about the "Eastside" handle, that apparently bothers some folk, in a way being referred to as the "Westside" never would. Is it a class thing? A race thing???

Silver Lake is NE LA, I don't think of it as "Eastside."

Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, East LA are "Eastside" IMO.

That's the whole point. Silver Lake cares- or, at least the Neighborhood Council does. And, presumably, they are expressing the concerns of their citizens.

Their stated rationale is, they are interested in drawing a distinction with what they say is LA's ACTUAL Eastside (by which they apparently mean east of the river, out of "respect for that area's rich history"

That sounds like bul$&@" to me.

So what's really going on here?

They'll probably like the name "Far West Hollywood".

Hmm..I thought the hipsters always wanted to claim the Eastside though...because the westside is soooo mainstream and Silverlake is "rough and edgy"

Here's more coverage of tonight's vote, from Jesus Sanchez's "Eastsider" blog (Yes, Sanchez considers Silver Lake part of the Eastside):
