Help.. I'm torn between San Francisco and LA. I think both are excellent cities, but I want to know which one in Cali can I "SAVE" the most money. I know that it's expensive to live in Cali (more expensive in NoCal), but I have also read that salaries up in the bay area are higher... I've never been to California so I need all the help I can get...

You have never been to California yet think both LA and San Francisco are excellent cities? Now that is an interesting statement. Well for one, the cities are very different from each other..

You're definitely *NOT* going to save any money if you move to San Francisco.
They're both expensive, but you can still find relatively affordable neighborhoods in L.A....safe ones, too!
Palms and Echo Park come to mind, off the top of my head.
You can find relatively affordable areas in the *East Bay* (North Oakland, Emeryville), but San Fran is sort of slim pickings.
Visitation Valley, the fringes of Western Addition/Fillmore, *maybe* a spot in Potrero Hill, but that's about it...aside from more hardcore areas like Hunter's Point and Bayview.
If you like natural geography and climate, and prefer to drive over public transportation, go to L.A.
If you like urban hustle and bustle, and trains and buses, go with San Francisco.
Ultimately, L.A. is cheaper than San Francisco.

I know I wouldn't base my decision on what others say. I have been to both LA and SF and they are so vastly different I can't imagine making that decision based on peoples opinion. It's lunacy I tell ya!

Exactly. People's opinions differ and a person has to go there to find out for themself. Myself, I find San Francisco to be very overrated even tho many, many people rave about it. I love LA tho.

if you have never been here, how do you know that you will like either city? lots of places look good on paper, but that doesn't mean they are the right places for YOU!

Yeah I know my statement is kind of confusing..
You see, I'm from another country and my working license is in California (long story).. Went I went there in US the last time, I only got to see the eastern side (NYC and neighboring states) but not the western side..
I know LA and San Francisco have their own advantages and disadvantages. I'm flexible and I can pretty much adjust to whatever environment I'm in so right now my personal feelings or preference as to where I actually want to live isn't my first concern..
I just want to know which one can I save the most money.... if for some time I really don't like the place, then I'll relocate..

Well, LA is bigger than SF. Much bigger. LA's large size is an advantage and disadvantage. For example, you will find a lot more neighborhoods and apartments too choose from if you are looking for something cheap. The disadvantage, however, is that you will need a car in LA, and will have to deal with lots of traffic and high gas prices and insurance. The city of SF, on the other hand, is smaller and more compact, so you can get by taking public transportation and not have to deal with the expense of a car.
