I am from the east coast and will be doing an internship in Sylmar this summer. I have been researching areas to live. I am totally confused. About the time I think I have found a place, I read don't live north of this place or south of this and don't go one block over. Not knowing the area this is very stressful. So on that note, I am looking for a place that my commute won't be too bad, a safe area, a pretty good walking score. Price around $1000 to $1200, which could include a one bedroom, loft or roommate. Thanks so, much for any advice you can give.

I would look into Valencia, Santa Clarita and Northridge, in that order. I would generally stay away from the Panorama City, Pacoima and North Van Nuys area. Given your budget, though, I would say you shouldn't have a problem finding something in your price range even in the nicest sections of the three cities I mentioned - especially if you're OK with roommates. Look at Cal State Northridge and maybe seek advice from someone there (I'm sure there are forums specific to CSUN) in terms of finding roommates.

You could also live further east in La Crescenta or North Glendale, very nice safe areas. I would not live in Sylmar or areas close by, such as Pacoima.
