Hello! This is probably similar to many other threads on the forum, but any input on where you think I should live after finishing grad school this August will be really helpful! I cannot decide among Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach or Long Beach. I personally love Marina Del Rey, Playa Vista and Playa Del Rey as well, but it's going to be far from my job.

Here's some information about me:
-23
-female, straight
-single
-i'm foreigner who has been in LA for 6 years
-love the beach and want to learn how to surf
-i like to work out, travel, play the piano, dance, and have good wine and food when not working or studying
-have a car and hate traffic
-my job is in Long Beach
-price would be below $2,000/month, preferably a studio or at least a bedroom&bathroom to myself

I like South Bay because it's safe and just beautiful there. But I also have some concerns. I got the feeling that both Manhattan and Hermosa beach are super white and fratty. I am Asian and a LA transplant, so I'm wondering whether that means it is harder for me to fit in if I end up living in this area?

Also, it seems that lots of guys who ask about living in this area are very interested in meeting young single girls in the bars and the clubs. Would you say that Hermosa and Manhattan are not optimal to live if I am looking for a more serious relationship rather than just one night stands?

Thank you for spending the time to read through this! Have a great day

If you hate traffic and work in Long Beach, my advice would be to live near the job. It's a lot more pleasant to drive out to Manhattan and Redondo to go surfing on the weekends than to live in MB and drive to Long Beach every day for work. But you know what, if you really like MB or HB, the traffic isn't that bad. I lived in MB and commuted to Long Beach for a few years and you get use to it pretty quickly. Especially if you can arrange work hours that let you go in a little earlier or later than the heaviest traffic.

Although you may have gotten an impression that everyone in MB and HB is super white and fratty, in reality all kinds of people live in the south bay, and that includes all races. You won't have any trouble finding people you'll feel comfortable doing things with.

Wherever you end up, welcome to the beach cities.

$2000 is a lot for a small apartment. That basically puts you beachfront. If you take the 405 to work, Marina Del Rey takes just about as long to get to as Hermosa. Unless you want to walk to the beach for the bars and carry your surfboard, you can actually rent a house for that much in Torrance. The northern part of Torrance has good freeway access and is about 10 mins to the beach. Personally I'd live beach front in Redondo and surf before work.

Sorry, can't comment on the single situation. Even though you've been here for 6 years with a car, wondering about racial acceptance makes me wonder if there is a language barrier. If there is, I'd say most areas regardless of being heavily white will pose the same challenges.
