I don't watch the local news very much, the most I catch is either the weather when it rains (trusty ol' Johnny Mountain) or a promo or something during a show for the 10 or 11 o clock news. Couldn't tell you who all the newscasters are now.

I think TV journalism in the US has failed its job in general, but that's another story in itself.

It is covered in the print media and in electronic media (City-Data for example). It seems TV news has a different role.

A week or two ago, the Times did some stories on the front page about the falling dollar, costs in europe. How it affected, I think farmers in france and retailers over there.

TV news is infotainment, not journalism. Any story about the problems illegals bring gets shot down as racist. The rest of the issues you list just aren't sexy and don't have an easy scapegoat to blame. But run a teaser about who some actwhore is sleeping with or how your family will die from the hidden danger in your bathroom, and people will tune in at 11:00.

Issues like cost of living and traffic can't be covered in a 30 second soundbite. Not to mention that most TV viewers wouldn't understand what the hell they were talking about even if they did report it.

The local news cannot report on general topics. They need a specific story and it has to be relevant to their viewers. Everyone already knows that LA housing costs are astronomicly high and out of synch with middle class incomes. Everyones knows about the illegal alien invasion. Everyone knows about environmental issues. And the response from a news reporter would be - what about it? They need a specific story to report.
