It was worse everywhere but LA was really bad in the early 90's. That part of 90's nostalgia I don't miss.

I think the 90's nostalgia is more about the mid-90's period when crime was rapidly decreasing and a sense of calmness fueled a bohemian culture. People miss the pre-9/11, pre-War on Terror time in America. We live in culture of fear but the 90's, in retrospect(and maybe incorrectly), felt like a culture of hope.

I think the Rodney King riots is what pushed things over the top in the 90s. Plus i believe there were consecutive years of 1000 murders just in the city alone.

The 90s were by far the worse period of Los Angeles in recent history. Everyone expected LA to become “Escape for LA” but it never happened. Instead, the air got cleaner, the crime reduced dramatically, and the cultural scene got better. Of course, we still have the water issue, but that’s more of a California problem.

And we still need to deal with police abuses but the LAPD have at least a much better reputation than a lot of the police departments in other parts of the country.

The biggest issue that LA faces now is housing costs, income inequality/poverty. And the never-ending battle with finding faster ways to get around town.

^^Good post Dtran.

On the cultural front: the Getty Center was under construction and opened in the late 90's. The design for Disney Hall was hatched in 1988 but it took years until it finally opened in the early 2000's.

I always wondered, did whites go to South Central when they wanted to score crack? In St Petersburg, FL where I grew up, you'd have to go to the south side when you were really desperate.

I was born in 1992 so obviously a lot of my friends were too since we went to high school together. All I can always think of is how our moms made it through the stress of the riots. I grew up in Playa del Rey, and while it's a nice area, it's a straight shot down Manchester a few minutes to Inglewood and other bad areas. My mom told me the shelves at the local Ralph's were emptied out as if the city was preparing for a hurricane and she remembers walking out while the manager announced that the store was closing because of a large group of black people were in the parking lot. My mom said they were just regular shoppers since all the grocery stores in South Central had been looted already, but apparently the manager didn't want to take any chances? Seems kinda racist, but I get the fear at the time though. That was while she was 7-8 months pregnant with me, so I can't imagine the stress that must have put on all the parents of children born in 1992.

Besides that, it's crazy to think so many Angelenos were raised in that hostile environment. After moving out of LA though, it seems like a lot of people don't even realize the LA Riots existed, or don't realize actually how horrific they were.

Even still, according to Wiki, LA County grew 18.5% adding 656,174 people from 1990-2000. Clearly the riots didn't deter anyone from moving there haha.

There was a riot on streets
Tell me where were you?
You were sittin' home watchin' your TV
While I was participating in some anarchy...
