Hi,

Trying to get a handle on Little Tokyo (relocating from Chicago; commuting to USC health sciences campus) as a place to live.

It's in a great location in terms of commuting for us, has a great walk score, is close to public transpo., and is more central to the rest of LA than, say, Pasadena (which we are also considering).

I'm curious about safety and how touristy it is. Also wondering what the scene is in DTLA at night during the week—does everyone bail or are people out and about?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Little Toyko is safe, quaint and clean. The LAPD Headquarters is right down the block. It is safe and I have never felt in danger in that area. It is typically uncrowded, but there are tourists there from time to time.

Great Area! It's safe, clean & less crowded than other parts of DTLA but has more fun bars and restaurants. Your also close to Public transit, which is great of you want to get to other areas with access (Hollywood, Koreatown, Pasadena, Long Beach), but not as great, albeit doable, to get to the westside & Beach cities, yet.

Nightlife is really good in DTLA so that shouldn't be a problem. Some of the hottest new bars and restaurants are in DTLA.

Just watch out for skid row

Thanks for the info, jamills21 and ccm123. I saw an old(ish) comment talking about how walking from Spring street to Little Tokyo is sketchy—would you agree? I'd like to be able to get to most of DTLA on foot without worrying about safety and was hoping I could easily walk West on, say, 1st or 2nd, without a problem. Thoughts?

Also curious about walking from LT into Chinatown. Cool?

Thanks!!

Also one of the only areas downtown that has walking access to some proper grocery stores. Aren't apartments pretty expensive around there, though?

You'll be fine...The middle of Skid Row is 5th & San Pedro, but you will probably never come near that area. 1st & 2nd st. are both fine and there are some new apts being built now that will enliven the area even more later this year. The general rule in DTLA is to not go past Los Angeles St. unless you are above 2nd or below 9th. It's not that you'll be in any danger, but walking past all the homeless is not pleasant for most people.

Walking from Little Tokyo to Chinatown no problem & there is Dash (.50c bus) & Metro Rail service between them. Just know that DTLA is in transition and can be sketchy in some parts but not necessarily unsafe (especially Broadway at night). It's an exciting area with a ton of potential, growing & it's only going to get bigger.

I walked through Skid Row many times to get to work, and as long as you keep to yourself and keep walking, chances are they will not bother you.

SpaceMonkeyPunks, if you have any other ideas about lively neighborhoods with good density of amenities, **serious** walkability, good commute to USC Health Sciences campus, reasonable safety, that have lower rents I am all ears!

jamills21 and Moreau36—thanks a ton for feedback on Skid Row. Appreciate it.

I like it, don't think I wanna live there, but that's not about objections to the area that's just me having preferences elsewhere.

It's fine and safe during the day. Exercise some caution at night. The walk to Chinatown is safe.
