Both cities have their dangerous sides and great areas. San Francisco has Tenderloin and Bayview/Hunter's Point, which are dangerous areas.

Where do you propose they live instead?

Neither city is particularly "dangerous", by national standards. I don't think LA or SF cracks the FBI's top 25, in terms of Part One crimes per capita.

Oakland, on the other hand, ranked #8 in the country, last time I checked.

What he said. Doesn't hold a candle to Detroit or Flint, Michigan.

San Francisco feels less safe to me than Los Angeles, but that's mostly because pretty much all of San Francisco is laced with scummier areas. The distance between upscale and gutter is like half a city block all over San Francisco. Not sure why it's like that, but that's what I've always seen there. Los Angeles is more sectioned off. In LA you have large areas of affluence and large lower class areas that have their fair share of scumminess. It's much easier to avoid the scummy areas in LA than SF.

Yeah, I have been closer to crime in SF, never actually involved in a physical assault in L.A. like I have been up there. Street smart goes a long way and neither city is really as heads-up as others. But in this comparison SF is more "dangerous."

I think SF "feels" more dangerous because you're usually walking everywhere so you're out mingling with all walks of life.

In LA, rarely are you walking from Downtown to the Sunset Strip or from Hollywood Blvd to Beverly Hills. In LA, you drive to the restaurant or bar you're going to because you're not taking a bus at midnight. You're also not taking a bus from your apartment in Koreatown to the Getty Museum because that isn't the most convenient trek. A lot of people drive to their destinations, so you're not really mingling with society--just with the people at your destination.

YOU never mingle with society, that is. YOU have never taken the bus at midnight. YOU have never gone out from an apartment in Koreatown. Or from SOMA to an apartment in Ingleside for that matter, as if that's some pedestrian wonderland LOL.
