Southern Southern Californian Behavior vs. the Rest of the U.S. (transfer, car)

Moved here a few years ago. I find the people here are great and wonderfully accepting. I travel all over the southwest and I would not live anywhere else.

LOL. Brea has really captured the essence of the Midwest. It wasn't by accident that Wisconsin produced Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer. I grew up in Wisconsin, lived in California for 30 years, and, for reasons I won't bore you with, returned to Wisconsin. I am now in the process of escaping Wisconsin. Here is how I would contrast Southern California with the Midwest (I'll skip the weather, that's obvious):

MidW: Why don't you do to church? Do you want to burn in hell?
SoCal: You're a devotee of Baba Rama Huptee Duptee? Cool.

MidW: Did you see her hair? Her grandmother must be turning over in her grave.
SoCal: Hey dude, who did your tats?

MidW: Matilda said that Barb told her that that new couple who moved into the Taylor house are vegetarians. You know those vegetarians are all communists.
SoCal: My aunt was on the Pekinese hair and raisin diet and she lost mega poundage. I'm getting a coffee colonic tomorrow. Wanna come along?

MidW: Jim's car is stuck in the snow bank. Go help him push it and see if you can find out why they don't have any children.
SoCal: Whatshisname's car won't start. Go help him start it and find out if he's got some good bud.

The Midwest is the land of conformity and regimentation. People are expected to follow tradition. The notion of enjoying one's work is suspect and seeking fulfillment is...well..."a communist idea". Your business is everyone else's business and a stranger sitting next to you at the Friday night fish fry will know your name and ask if you've found Jesus.

Southern California has a live and let live attitude. People are expected to follow their own paths, to express themselves, and to seek self-fulfillment. Your business is your business while, at the same time, if the stranger sitting next to you at a party has been sexually molested by aliens, is in therapy, or had buttock implants, they'll tell you and show you.

i was in an accident last week, stopped at a red light at franklin and argyle. a lady rear-ended me, pushing me into the car in front of me. airbag popped out and everything. only 1 person stopped to see if we needed help. it was around 1:00 pm so there was quite a bit of traffic right there.

in texas, you would have had at least 5 people stop to see if you were ok and fill out a witness report thing. the one guy who stopped took off before we could get a witness report.

Doesn't sound too healthy for you. Why don't you move? There are very few fields/careers that can't be transferred - maybe not the exact same job but one with similar skill sets. Even if it meant a 20%-30% pay cut it might be better than subjecting yourself to this stress.

Where are you from in WI? Sounds kind of sterotypical. I'm guessing you are from a rural area. I grew up in Milwaukee. It's far from the hick towns you described. Chicago is also far from that.

LA is definitely different though. I think people in LA are actually in better moods than here in WI. I don't blame them either because of the weather. However, I've noticed that those up north or in other rural areas like snow and the cold a lot more than Milwaukee residents.

That is an undeniable example of the self centered attitudes of many Southern Californians. Terrible that they would not stop to see if you were okay. It is part of being human to help out in those situations.

It is situations like those that are telling of someones character. Not random day to day meetings where people act happy to your face.

Similar to something like:

"If your friend were to run away instead of fighting by your side if you were being mugged by a group of guys"!

"Very telling of their character". Insensitivity towards someone in dire of help is a true sign of lack of character and integrity!

Hope you are okay...sorry to hear about that, I would have stopped, I have many times, thats what makes me different from most Southern Californians.

I remember one time a guy in front of me had a seizure and he ran across the street, took out a tree. He lodged himself up on the embankment and had his foot on the gas. His tire exploded and his rim took out a water main. His wheels were spinning and his car was rocking because he was still in seizure. I stopped and picked up a rock trying to break his window so I could shut the car off. I was unable to break the window and bloodied and cut my hands trying. But I never thought twice about it, just a natural reaction to help my fellow man.

Other people just stood there in disbelief never thought twice to try and help. The cops finally came and broke the window.

But thats the kind of person I am, don't meet many others like that around here.

Seriously, I don't think about lawsuits in a situation like that. What would the guy sue for anyway. His car was completely trashed already, by having his foot on the gas he could have killed himself or others if he rocked loose and went for another ride. My last concern was being sued, thats the problem with America nowadays. We need to throw out the ridiculous lawsuits that are corrupting our legal system and bogging it down.

"I spilled hot coffee on myself", "I'm to stupid to know it's hot", please write a gigantor label on the side for the other morons"

No I never thought twice about a law suit, I still believe in America despite the corrupt lawyers and lazy morons who would take advantage of the system like that. I have faith in humankind, I'm sure the guy would have been thankful for my efforts in trying and save his life and other innocent bystanders.
