Not wanting to be accosted by aggressive begging does not contradict concern for less fortunate people.
It is just bad manners to distract someone who is clearly busy with your own unrelated agenda. What happened to simply taking "no" for an answer? Some of us actually mean it.

“Argh!! When the new company took over Fresh & Easy, they banned the organizing folks from standing outside bothering customers to join or donate to organizations. Yesterday I went to mine in Signal Hill and there were three blue shirts blocking the doorway trying to get me to support something. I noticed that the sign banning them from being there had been taken down.”

Har dee har har, these guys HATE me. When they would approach me, I'd tell 'em I'll sign your petition if you can answer one of these questions.

What is the AFL-CIO?

What do US unions have to do with Cigars?

Who were any or all of these guys: John L Lewis, Jimmy Hoffa, George Meany, Samuel Gompers

Four, maybe five times these guys had a go at this; even brought in the local crew chief in a couple times. Only once did I get an answer better than a blank look or something really off the all, (like “What show is he on?' or “Was he a US President?”). One of the braniacs said, “Hoffa? Isn't that the mafia guy they made a movie about”
