The downtown Los Angeles population grew from about 30,000 residents in 2000 to about 50,000 in the 2010 census.

When I say donwtown I am thinking primarily of the downtown core inside the 10, 101 and 110 freeways as well as Center City West (the few blocks immediately west of the 110 freeway).

When the Adaptive Reuse Ordinance was passed in 1999, it was suggested that 80,000 residents would entail a self-sustaining downtown population with the full compliment of retail and support services.

How long until you think downtown can reach that milestone? What do you think the population will be in the next five to ten years?

That is pretty fast....would be great if it happened that quickly.

Just making a very rough short-term guestimate: the downtown BID estimates the current downtown population at about 53,000 residents and there are about 5,000 units under development.

Let's say all those get built over the next 3 to 5 years: 1.5 per houseold times 5,000 units is 7,500 new residents. That gets you to roughly 60,000 residents in 3 to 5 years. Of course, new projects get announced all the time.

I would guess 2 people per unit though.

It will likely reach that level due to countless projects under construction.

The only concern will be the keep up of the infastructure with the population growth of the area. Pedestrian and automobile traffic in DTLA is already nightmarish enough.
