Hi,
I'm planning to move to LA soon and I'm looking for an interesting vibrant part of town. A friend recommended i look downtown, perhaps the artist district (as I am an artist). I was just researching areas in the map below and was wondering if anybody could tell me about any places in that area (paticularily places to stay clear of). I don't know LA at all, so i'd really appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

Downtown's pretty shady. Only reason to go there is to the convention center.

Downtown's really not that bad anymore. There's tons of really nice places going up that I would love to live in.

If you want vibrant, go for Hollywood, specifically West Hollywood. Downtown is not our party scene, West Hollywood is.

Thanks for the advice. I know Downtown is by far not the safest place (occasional gunfire doesn't really bother me and I don't hang out on the streets at night in vibrant colors) I was just wondering if it was a notorious gang territory. Any suggestions on cool areas around there (I looked at south park, central city west and art district so far). I'm going to visit in a couple of weeks.
Anybody been in the Elleven building or the old Toy Factory? (just browsing the net for an aptmnt).

There's more to downtown than the convention center and it's not as bad as some seem to make it. (Individuals who don't even live in Los Angeles)

There are a lot of renovations going on in downtown, from Broadway to South Park, to across the 110 and even on the eastern portion. There are a couple of advantages to living in downtown which are: less driving needs, L.A. Live will be within walking distance, the Metro has three destinations from there North, South and East to Pasadena. Consider West LA and West Hollywood as well. You will find much more entertainment there since L.A. live and other projects are still under construction or just being approved for construction.

Most of my artist friends live in Venice. As far as I know, there is quite an artist community there. I would prefer to live in Venice over downtown any day! Bergamot Station is just a short drive away in Santa Monica. Not really sure what sort of art you are into - have you heard of Raid Projects? I know they are downtown, but I still would prefer not to rest my head in the area.

Don't believe the "downtown is shady" comments. In fact, it's one of the safest districts in the city based on violent crime data. I will begin a new job there next month and I'm considering renting a loft or condo there too. There are a lot of affluent, hip, urban, professional types downtown, both young and more mature in years. The loft buildings are particularly attrative to artists. I visited the Reserve Lofts http://reservelofts.com/ on Sat. and will be touring Metro 417 http://www.metro417.com/templates/te...asp?w=metro417 later this week. There are also cool apartments like Pegasus http://www.pegasusapartments.com/ to choose from too. Here's a list of resources on downtown:

A lot will depend on your budget, but basically the areas that are most popular among artists are downtown, Echo Park, Silverlake, Los Feliz, Hollywood, Miracle Mile/Fairfax District, Venice and Santa Monica. North Hollywood also has some appeal for artists on a budget.
